    Flag Point: Flag Point in Port Blair holds great historical significance as it is the
    place where Netaji Subhash Chandra Bose hoisted the Indian Tricolour on Indian
    soil for the first time on 30th December 1943. This event took place during the
    occupation of the Andaman and Nicobar Islands by the Japanese imperial forces in
    World War II. Netaji was accompanied by officials of Azad Hind Fauj and the
    provisional government of Azad Hind during the hoisting of the flag. The Japanese
    had declared that the islands would be transferred to the provisional Government,
    Azad Hind, and Netaji, as the Supreme Commander of Azad Hind Fauj and head of
    the state of the provisional government, took the opportunity to assert India’s
    independence. Today, a 150-feet high flag mast stands at the same spot where
    Netaji unfurled the Tricolor, and it was inaugurated by Prime Minister Narendra Modi
    on the 75th anniversary of this historic event.
